Obsolete Software
What does obsolete really mean?
Planning to make devices “obsolete” is a strategy used by Big Tech companies to ensure their products become outdated and unusable after a specific period of time, forcing you to buy new and causing permanent environmental damage as the old devices are thrown away. And it doesn’t stop there. From refusing to update the software systems for older models to designing devices with impossible-to-replace batteries, it’s a key principal of the fast tech industry.

MacBooks with obsolete software
These devices will continue to receive security updates from from Apple until 2028, but are technically considered “obsolete,” despite being 100% functional.- 4.4/5 (3,591)

The 5 questions people always ask.
These MacBooks follow the exact same grading system as all devices on Back Market (Fair, Good, Excellent, in the case of MacBooks.) with one extra detail: visible sticker marks on the body. These are traces left by stickers a previous owner placed on their MacBook, not glue residue or damage. The device itself is fully graded, fully checked as usual. Screen, keyboard, trackpad, and all internal components meet Back Market's quality standards. "Ugly" just means it carries a little evidence of a life well-lived.
Yes. Our "ugly" MacBooks run M1 to M4 chips (Apple's latest) and receive full macOS updates like any other MacBook. Our Windows laptops rebooted with ChromeOS and our ChromeOS USB key also give you a fully modern, secure, and up-to-date experience on older hardware. Note: if you're looking at one of our Intel MacBooks (sold separately), those are also fully functional but will no longer receive future macOS versions. We explain this clearly on each product page.
The exact same warranty as any device on Back Market: minimum 12 months, covering hardware defects. The cosmetic condition or software lifecycle of a device has no impact on your warranty.
Software obsolescence means a device will no longer receive new operating system updates from its manufacturer. It still works, it just won't go beyond a certain version. Our ugly MacBooks (M1-M4) are not affected by this. Our Intel MacBooks are, and we clearly flag this on their product pages so you can choose with full information. For Windows 10 laptops facing the same situation, we also offer two solutions: laptops rebooted with ChromeOS, and a ChromeOS USB key that can give a second life to a device you already own.
"Ugly" MacBooks are ideal for anyone who wants powerful, modern Apple hardware at a lower price and doesn't mind a few sticker marks. Software-obsolete Intel MacBooks suit daily use, basic tasks, or users who don't rely on the latest apps or OS features, at an even lower price point. Our Windows laptops rebooted with ChromeOS are a great fit for anyone on a tight budget who needs a reliable, everyday laptop without breaking the bank. And if you already own an old machine, our ChromeOS USB key lets you give it a second life without buying anything new.
