iPhone 12 vs iPhone 8 Plus Comparison

iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone 12

Released about three years apart, iPhone users will notice some key differences between the iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone 12. Apple made significant changes in the design, performance, and camera capabilities of these two models.

That said, we all have different needs and budgets when it comes to buying a smartphone. If you’re not sure which iPhone is better for you, here are some things to consider.

Screen size and display: How big is iPhone 8 Plus vs iPhone 12?

While Apple’s plus-size models are usually larger than their standard iPhones, this isn’t the case when comparing the screen size of the iPhone 8 Plus to the iPhone 12. The iPhone 8 Plus is larger in overall size, measuring 6.24 inches high by 3.07 inches wide compared to the iPhone 12, which measures 5.78 inches high by 2.82 inches wide.

However, dimensions don’t tell the whole story when it comes to screen size. Screen size is measured diagonally and the iPhone 12 actually has a bigger screen (despite its smaller dimensions) compared to the 8 Plus. The iPhone 12 has a 6.1-inch all-screen OLED display, while the 8 Plus has a 5.5-inch widescreen LCD Multi-Touch display with IPS technology.

The iPhone 12 has some advantages over the iPhone 8 Plus when it comes to size. The smaller overall dimensions of the iPhone 12 make it a bit easier to hold and use, especially if you prefer to use your phone with one hand. At the same time, the all-screen display offers a bigger viewable screen area than the 8 Plus, making it more comfortable for users who watch a lot of video content or make video calls. This is especially true because the resolution is nearly 40% better on the iPhone 12’s display.

Design

The iPhone 8 Plus has a classic home button, which limits the screen size. The home button uses TouchID, Apple’s fingerprint reader technology, to unlock the phone. The button also allows other functions, such as returning to the home screen and closing apps.

The iPhone 12 swaps out TouchID for Apple’s newer facial recognition tech, FaceID, and uses swiping gestures instead of a home button for navigation. If you like having a physical home button, you'll prefer the iPhone 8 Plus or the iPhone SE.

Performance and battery life

The newer iPhone 12 has more advanced components than the iPhone 8 Plus. With a more powerful processor, the iPhone 12 is about 30% faster than the 8 Plus. The iPhone 12 also has more RAM with 4GB versus 3GB in the iPhone 8 Plus.

The iPhone 12 offers a longer battery life than the 8 Plus. The iPhone 12 battery lasts up to 17 hours of video playback compared to 14 hours for the 8 Plus. The iPhone 12 is equipped with MagSafe and has a glass back for wireless charging, while the 8 Plus works only with Qi chargers for wireless charging.

The iPhone 12 also supports 5G, while the 8 Plus does not. As more carriers expand their 5G network coverage, this may become an increasingly important consideration for some users.

Camera

iPhone cameras tend to improve with each model, and these two phones are no exception. The iPhone 8 Plus has dual 12MP Wide and Telephoto cameras, while the iPhone 12 has a dual 12MP camera system with Ultra Wide and Wide cameras. The wider lens and Night Mode on the iPhone 12 lets in more light for improved photos in low light conditions.

Which is better: iPhone 8 Plus or iPhone 12?

The iPhone 12 is a better choice if you're looking for more modern features. It offers faster processing, a larger screen size, and more efficient battery life than the 8 Plus. While Aple does support its products with software and security updates for a pretty long time, you’ll receive support for longer if you opt for the newer iPhone 12.

The iPhone 8 Plus is affordable—especially if you buy refurbished—so it’s a good compromise between price and performance. It's also suitable for users who aren't comfortable with facial recognition technology or who prefer a physical home button.
